Infant Formula “Crisis”

The Solution Is Simple

Supply chain issues, bacterial contamination and irrational trade and regulatory policies have created a shortage of infant formula. Additionally, while many people were working from home during the “pandemic”, some were taking work breaks and making babies, creating an uptick in the number of babies born in early 2022.

For some reason there is also an increase in the number of moms choosing not to breastfeed. I can’t say I understand why this is happening. It’s one thing if you are not producing enough milk and you’ve tried everything possible to remedy this and still can’t. But to chose not to is NOT in the best interest of the baby. This is not a criticism or judgment- it’s about health and nature. There is no commercial infant formula that comes close to the nutrient profile of breast milk from a healthy, well-nourished mother.

What’s worse is that there is NO commercial formula that is actually GOOD. They all contain seed oils which are highly inflammatory. Even organic formulas contain seed oils. Some organic European brands are of higher quality, but I’ve never found one without seed oil. And the irrational trade and regulatory policies I mentioned above prohibit the US from selling European brands.

In addition to seed oils, commercial formulas often contain other toxic ingredients such as polydextrose, processed cow milk loaded with hormones and antibiotics, and genetically modified ingredients. If the infant is allergic to cow milk then the formula is made from genetically modified soy. I would not feed these formulas to anyone, especially a delicate newborn baby.

Fortunately there are alternatives!

  • “Lact-Aid” is a device that assists moms struggling with breastfeeding. Learn more here: https://www.lact-aid.com/
  • La Leche League International is a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to assisting moms with breastfeeding issues. Learn more here: https://www.llli.org/
  • There are recipes for breast milk replacement that are actually healthy. In my video about raw milk I interview Sally Fallon Morrel, the founder of the Real Milk campaign. We talk about the infant formula recipe and the health benefits of raw milk. You can watch that video here and the link to the formula recipe is below:
